High Green House.
High Green was first mentioned in Ecclesfield parish register in 1599 as Hyegrene. William Fairbank’s map of 1790 shows it as a small hamlet clustered around a roughly rectangular green. High Green House has been the home of a long succession of notable local residents including the coroner and hymn writer, John Foster, who lived there from 1782 until 1822; Mr George Chambers of Newton Chambers who is said to have re-built it in 1862 and Mr Harrison, the first headmaster of Ecclesfield Grammar School
